New Hampshire Environmental Literacy Plan is Ready for Implementation
SHARE
New Hampshire has taken an important step forward in strengthening environmental education with the updated 2026 New Hampshire Environmental Literacy Plan. Convened by New Hampshire Environmental Educators, the plan outlines a shared vision to ensure that all residents have the knowledge, skills, and motivation to make informed decisions about the environment. In New Hampshire, where our identity and economy are closely tied to our natural landscapes, there is a long history of conservation, outdoor recreation, and community based stewardship. The 2026 updated Plan reflects broad input from educators, nonprofits, community leaders, residents, and state agencies.
Now that the plan is complete, the focus shifts to implementation, and that responsibility is shared by all. People who care about wildlife and healthy habitats have an important role to play in building environmental literacy across New Hampshire. Whether it’s exploring local forests and wetlands, learning about native species, supporting conservation projects, restoring habitat, participating in community science, or sharing knowledge with others, everyday actions help strengthen connections between people and the natural world. The plan emphasizes that meaningful environmental learning happens in many places, from classrooms and backyards to forests, fields, wetlands, and waterways where New Hampshire’s wildlife depends on healthy habitats to thrive.
The Four Goals of the Plan include:
- Expand Access to Environmental Learning Across All Ages and Settings
- Empower Youth and Communities as Environmental Stewards and Changemakers
- Provide High-Quality, Widely Accessible Professional Development for Formal and Informal Educators
- Create Pathways to Integrate Environmental Literacy into Curriculum and Standards.
